McNidder & Grace Limited was established in 2011 by publisher Andy Peden Smith and he now works with his partner Caroline Peden Smith running the business together. Both Andy and Caroline are publishers with an extensive background and experience in publishing high quality and award-winning books.
We specialise in non-fiction and fiction titles for adults. With a particular emphasis on popular culture, our non-fiction list includes books on photography, art, music, biography, history, country pursuits and more recently health and well-being.
We are also very proud of our popular Railway Journeys in Art Poster to Poster series, a nine-volume set of engaging, beautifully illustrated railway travel books in collaboration with the National Railway Museum and Swann Galleries, New York.
Our fiction list concentrates primarily on Crime and Thrillers to include the best-selling Torquil MacLeod Malmö series.
Why do small independent publishers matter?
It's a question we think about when we're deciding whether to take on a new book at McNidder & Grace.
We don't have the resources of the major publishing houses, and we certainly can't publish everything we'd like to.
But being small has its advantages.
We can take an interest in subjects that might be considered too specialised elsewhere. We can work closely with authors. And we can sometimes take a chance on a book simply because we believe there's a worthwhile story to tell.
Of course, we still have to sell enough copies to keep the business going!
But there's something enormously satisfying about helping an author turn years of research, knowledge or personal experience into a finished book.
And occasionally, the most specialised subjects produce the most fascinating books.
That's one of the reasons we still love independent publishing.
