The Poster to Poster series is a nine-volume definitive collection of British railway posters which showcases many of the railway posters from the National Railway Museum at York and other museums and galleries. Each volume is a mixture of travel documentary, geographical and historical study, graphic artists' reference and poster database - all interlinked using the central theme of railway posters.
Volume 4 sees the journey begin with industrial scenes as we visit Immingham and Scunthorpe. We then visit the cities of Lincoln, Cambridge, Ely and Norwich, before reaching the coast at Great Yarmouth. The Norfolk Broads, the Fens and the pretty villages of Suffolk await, before it is into Hertfordshire and Essex. Essex featured surprisingly often in railway advertising and a mixture of shipping and holiday posters is included, for an area that saw many day-trippers come from London. With a Foreword written by the Rt. Hon Michael Portillo, it is a wonderful nostalgic journey.
‘Keep your eyes open and every day you will see excited people on their rail excursions to mountains, coasts and cathedrals, looking as though they had stepped from a poster such as shown in this volume.’ Michael Portillo.
‘The book feels like a quality product as soon as it is handled. The pictures are beautifully reproduced and the accompanying text is informative and to the point. The images are wonderfully 'of their time' when railway journeys were an adventure and not a test of endurance. A book into which I shall dip again and again.’ Y. K. Autie
‘Just as good as others in the series, all recommended. A multitude of posters covering most of the 20th century. A good buy even for those who have no interest in railways, some of the artwork in these posters is terrific.’ Ian Clark
